We were the ones you used to make fun of
We stayed at home alone, instead of falling in love
We never got the chance to be prom king
We didn't even dance, but here's the thingWe got the cars (hey)
We got the money (hey)
We need some sun, but I'm tellin' you, honey
That the geeks will, g-g-g-geeks will, we will inherit the earth
The Geeks will Inherit the Earth by I Fight Dragons
As I’ve talked about several times, I am a huge geek. So, of course a song about geeks inheriting the earth would be a motivational one for me. But this song from I Fight Dragons hits me on a personal level as well. Being a geek growing up in the 80s was not as accepted as it is today, so the lyrics above hit me a little more deeply. I was picked on in elementary and middle school and had issues with bullies so I can relate. Even asking out 38 different women in high school, I had zero dates and never went to prom. So, the song seems directed right at me. Thats not to say I had a bad time growing up. I had a small group of friends and was active with sport. But I think the experience did build my resiliency and self confidence that I didn’t care what others thought of me. Now a days, I still let me geek flag fly and just about everyone can talk Star Wars or comic books with the mainstreaming of a lot of that pop culture content. And just about everywhere I’ve lived, I can find a group playing Dungeons and Dragons.
Additionally, the world has become increasingly dependent on technology. Therefore, my interest in technology and computers at a young age has continued to be a benefit as an adult. As we use more technology in our lives, we still need to understand how it works. I’m not saying you need to be an expert on something, but you need to at least understand the concepts. In that sense we all need to be a little geeky to understand the world around us, so the geeks have inherited the earth. I’ve said it before in other posts, but continuous learning is critical to all of us to be aware of the complex world around us.
Also, we all have things we geek out about, whether video games or sports or fashion. Whatever it is, let that flag fly and be proud of what you’re a fan of. No need to hide it anymore.
